Kombuwhat? KombuCHA!

I get asked this question a lot, what is kombucha and why is it good for me?
I also get asked what is that weird floating thing inside the bottle? Haha That my friends is called The Mother or Scoby and it’s what ferments the liquid which turns it into a super food, packed with probiotics. Don’t worry you can swallow it, it’s not harmful it just has a strange texture.

Let’s get into this weird, amazing and intriguing beverage!

What is Kombucha?

  • To make kombucha, sugar-sweetened tea is fermented with a starter culture to create an “effervescent, tangy-tart end product,” says Wendy Bazilian, RD, co-author of Eat Clean, Stay Lean
  •  It contains live probiotics which act as beneficial bacteria for the gut, they assist the body in eliminating regularly {eliminating aka going poop, YES I will talk about bowel movements from time to time, it’s an important health topic and isn’t talked about enough}. Beneficial bacteria is also known to improve overall digestion and immunity.
  • “The detoxifying capacity of kombucha is immense. A perfect example is in its ability to counteract liver cell toxicity”. Says Dr Axe DNM, DC, CNS

Why I love it and how I enjoy it:

  • It’s a great way to get off Pop. The carbonation gives you the same taste as pop but without the added colours and heavy sugar.
  • I love adding a 1:1 ratio of kombucha to Perrier, it makes it last longer {at $3-5 a bottle, it can get a bit expensive} and lightens the flavour.
  • When I drink it regularly, I notice less bloating and discomfort and more regular bowl movements.
  • It’s thirst quenching and  super satisfying.
  • I enjoy adding it in during the holidays or a big celebration when I know there will be alcoholic beverages. It helps prevent too much indulgence and keeps my belly happy the next day 🙂

My favourite brands and flavours:

  • Booch {shown in the picture above} – citrus twist, bought at Local Organics in Seaforth
  • LIVE -naked flavour, bought at Gentle Rain in Stratford
  • Synergy- trilogy flavour, bought at Gentle Rain in Stratford
  • RISE- hibiscus and rose flavour, bought at The Stratford Health Store

*NOTE* If you are like me and have a weakened digestive system, start small. Drink 1/4 cup a day and see how you feel and increase accordingly. The biggest mistake I made, was introducing too much of it at once, with all of it’s beneficial bacteria and a lack of that in my body, it overwhelmed my stomach and I had some discomfort. Once I scaled back how much I drank, it made a huge difference.

I hope this helped you look at Kombucha from a new healthy light. Next time you are out buying groceries, pick up a bottle and give it a try, you may find a new superfood staple. If you have any other questions please comment below 🙂

Hi there. Do you take probiotic supplements, or just consume foods to get the good bacteria?

Hi Diane! I take a probiotic supplement as well. Digestion has always been my body’s area of weakness, so I like to incorporate fermented foods and supplementation on a regular basis 🙂
