Bulletproof coffee you say?

New Healthier Swap

Bulletproof coffee has quickly become my favourite way to enjoy a cup of joe.
[[Caffeine is something I limit to 1 cup a day, every other day, at most]]

I do this because I don’t want to become reliant on the caffeine stimulant and for me personally, hormonally and digestively my body can’t handle a daily dose. If you are someone who is still having a cup of coffee every single day, consider switching your Timmies double-double and go bulletproof with your next cup. Below I describe what it is, the company that started it and how you can make it.

I also provided some ways to beat the craving and start limiting the number of cups per day. 🙂

What’s in a bulletproof?

Bulletproof Coffee is made with high quality beans, blended with grass-fed unsalted butter or grass fed ghee{clarified butter, lactose free}  and MCT oil{higher potency that coconut oil}.

You can buy the name brand Bulletproof coffee products here, they also have a great blog and podcast. https://blog.bulletproof.com/how-to-make-your-coffee-bulletproof-and-your-morning-too/

**I add a dash of cinnamon to mine and sometimes some maple syrup and cacao, when I feel like a speciality coffee in the morning**

What makes it better?

  1. High quality beans contain less molds and toxins, which wreak havoc on your immune system, cognitive function and digestion.
  2. Organic grass fed butter: Grass-fed butter is higher than grain-fed butter in omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin E, and antioxidants. Grass-fed butter is high in butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid. Studies show that butyrate can both prevent and decrease inflammation in humans. Clean sourced, high quality butter provides healthy fat to our body which is needed for every cell in our being. Especially for eye sight, joint health and brain function.
  3. MCT oil: The brand from Bulletproof is called Brain Octane, it’s a purified form of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. MCTs have carbon tails that come in various lengths, from C-6 to C-12. The shorter the tail, the faster your body can absorb the MCT and convert it to ketones, little molecules that can fuel your brain instead of glucose. Brain Octane is pure C-8 MCT – it has 18 times the C-8 of coconut oil. It bypasses the liver processing entirely, making energy rapidly available to the brain.-Dave Asprey, Bulletproof Cofee. This ingredient in bulletproof coffee is what creates better focus and longer energy.

How to Make it?

  • Brew 1 cup (8-12 oz.) of coffee using filtered water, just off the boil, with 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Bulletproof Coffee Beans. (French Press is easiest.)
OR Brew 8-12 oz of high quality coffee you have on hand.
  • Add in 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane™ to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).
    OR 1 tbsp of MCT Oil {found at health food stores}
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or grass-fed ghee
  • Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy like a foamy latte

If you absolutely can’t go without sweetness in your coffee, AVOID WHITE SUGAR, add 1/2 tbsp of maple syrup, until you can wean yourself off the habit.

My favourite ways to help energize in the AM & decrease the “need” for coffee:

  • Inhale high quality peppermint oil first thing upon waking. I use Young Living essential oil and I keep peppermint beside my bed to help wake up my senses in the morning.
  • Dry brush  before you hop in the shower. Dry brushing is using a body brush {found at Gentle rain in Stratford} and brushing in circular motions towards your heart, starting from your feet and going up to your neck. This helps move and stimulate the lymphatic system and can  help you feel more alert and awake.
  • Take a hydro therapy shower first thing. This might take some getting used to, but it can help perk you up. Hydro therapy is when you change the temperature of water to a cold but tolerable temperature for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then turning back to warm. Repeating this a couple times during your shower or ending with a burst of cold can help wake up your body, not needing that instant hit of caffeine.

If coffee is a habit and a taste thing for you, try a herbal replacement coffee. There are some great faux coffee brands on the market, my favourite are:

I hope this gave you a good understanding of what this bulletproof coffee movement is all about. Try making this your new daily go to and journal if you noticed any positive changes from making the switch. I would love to hear from you 🙂
