What’s In My Pantry Series

What’s In My Pantry Series

How cute is that little display!? This was handmade for me at my surprise shower as a guessing game for my guests. My sister has a steady hand with a glue gun and a very creative mind. She probably didn’t know this project would come in handy down the road :)!  It’s the perfect prop for today’s post.

I wanted to let you in on a little secret… I am addicted to watching videos and reading posts on “What’s In My Pantry”. I absolutely love seeing what other health minded “seed eaters” keep on hand to stay on track. It’s always informative and I always step up my game a little more after watching or reading.
This inspired me to do my own! Sooooo, every Tuesday I am taking you inside my pantry to share with you my staple items from spices, baking ingredients, sauces/mixes, canned goods, snacks, to appliances and my pantry storage. If this is a hit and I get feedback to do more, I will do a What’s In My Fridge, What’s In My Makeup bag and What’s In My Purse & Gym Bag.
Let me know if this is something you would like to see in the comments below 🙂

What’s In My Pantry…Spices {the key to any good tasting dish}

I love using spices in pretty much EVERYTHING I make. It’s an affordable way to add superfood items into your diet and not only that, they add flavour, avoids unhealthy sauces and gives our body some major health benefits. For example:

Cinnamon-protects against free radical damage, anti-inflammatory properties, helps stabilize blood sugar levels, natural anti-microbial, anti-biotic, anti-fungal, and anti-viral agent.
Turmeric- anti-inflammatory, pain management, lowers blood sugar, healing to the gut, cholesterol regulator, inhibits tumours.
Chili Pepper-
natural pain relief, cardiovascular benefits, clears congestion, prevents stomach ulcers, boosts metabolism.
Ginger- {top 3 of my fav spices} anti-blood clotting ability, great for indigestion and nausea, helps to relieve constipation, promotes metabolism of your food, boosts immune system, anti-fungal, relieves stomach ulcers and GERD. This list goes on and on for this true SUPERFOOD!

Which spices do I NEVER go without?

  • Garlic fresh, minced and dried{you can’t get between me and my garlic ;)}
  • Onion powder
  • Cinnamon-*true cinnamon contains the health benefits.
  • Himalayan sea salt {more minerals, less refined than table salt}
  • Pepper, Chili pepper flakes
  • Paprika & Smoked paprika {adds a nice flavour to meat}
  • Ginger, fresh and dried
  • Indian spices: curry, coriander, cumin, turmeric, cardamom
  • Herbamare, a non GMO sea salt and herb seasoning with: celery*, leek*, cress*, onion*, chives*, parsley*, lovage*, garlic*, basil*, marjoram*, rosemary*, thyme*, kelp
  • Dried herbs: parsley, thyme, oregano, basil
  • Fresh herbs, alternate between: cilantro, parsley, thyme, basil{always, I<3 it}
  • Seasoning: Nutritional Yeast-not the same as baking yeast,plant based source of protein, high in B vitamins, selenium and zinc, aids in digestion and has a cheesy flavour.

My favourite brand for spices is Simply Organic,they come in glass containers and I always reuse the container after, especially for my DIY dry shampoo.

This brand can be bought at Zehrs, Gentle Rain, Stratford Health Store and Sobey’s.

Take a look at your spice collection, make sure:

  1. You have a lot of selection.
  2. You don’t just have bland flavours, step outside the box and SPICE IT UP!
  3. You don’t rely on mixes with added sugar and preservatives.
  4. To store them in air tight container to maintain freshness and potency.
  5. They are easy to reach and ready to be used at any meal.
  6. To buy good quality and organic when possible.

I hope this inspires you to give your taste buds a new surprise and not shy away from recipes that have flavours you haven’t tried or heard of. As always, ANY questions at all, please leave them for me in the comments below!

Have a terrific Tuesday. Live well TODAY- Steph 🙂
